Why Ants Love Hiding In Your AC’s Contactor
See that little black box? That’s a Sureswitch contactor, and it controls the flow of electricity into your unit. If it’s not working, your AC won’t turn on.
Our HVAC rockstar Colt narrowed down one homeowner’s problem to this exact Sureswitch. That square button is supposed to make contact — but it wasn’t.
Why, you ask?
Because a colony of ants had packed themselves inside and under the button.
How Ants In Your AC Unit Can Short It Out
But wait… it gets better. 🙄
When ants shack up in your HVAC unit, they form a contact bridge between two electrical points. The ants get electrocuted, which releases a distress pheromone from their tiny charred bodies. That pheromone sends an alert to their ant buddies, who take it as their friends being attacked and rush in to join the fight against the “enemy.”
The result? Dozens of these mini electrocutions in a row, which can cause a short circuit in your air conditioner.
